behind our name

awen

ɑːwɛn/    noun

divine, flowing creativity or inspiration.

The word ‘Awen’ comes from Welsh and Brittonic traditions and is often translated as "flowing inspiration" or "divine inspiration". Throughout Celtic mythology and modern Druid traditions, it has been associated with creativity, wisdom, spirit, and the unseen forces that connect us to one another and the world around us. For us, the meaning of Awen goes beyond inspiration alone. At its heart, Awen speaks to connection. It is the understanding that we are not separate from the world around us, but deeply woven into it. Connected to the land beneath our feet, the air in our lungs, the waters that sustain us, the people we love, the communities we build, and the countless living beings with whom we share this earth. Most of us have experienced moments when we feel this connection clearly. Perhaps while standing beneath a star-filled sky, sitting quietly beside a river, walking through a forest, or sharing a meaningful moment with another person. For a brief instant, the boundaries between ourselves and the world around us seem to soften. We remember that we belong. To us, Awen is the practice of returning to that remembering. In modern life, it is easy to feel disconnected — from our bodies, from our inner selves, from one another, and from the natural world. We become distracted, hurried, and pulled in countless directions. Yet beneath all of that, the connection remains. Awen invites us to come home to it. To slow down. To listen. To pay attention. To reconnect with ourselves so that we can reconnect more deeply with everything else. This is where yoga comes in. Beyond movement, yoga is a practice of remembering. Through breath, stillness, movement, and awareness, we create space to hear ourselves more clearly. We learn to notice what is happening within us and around us. We cultivate presence. And from that presence, connection naturally grows, and inspiration naturally flows. The word inspiration comes from the Latin ‘inspirare' — "to breathe into." Some scholars have also connected Awen to ancient roots associated with breath, spirit, and flowing life. Across cultures and traditions, breath has long been understood as something more than a biological process. It is the bridge between body and mind, the visible expression of life itself.  Breath is cyclical by nature. We breathe in, we breathe out, and begin again. Life itself moves in this rhythm. In our bodies, we take in oxygen, and release carbon dioxide. The world around us mirrors this cycle, as trees and plants take in what we release and return what we need to live. A shared rhythm of exchange, of reciprocity, of life. This shared rhythm is Awen in practice. In yoga, breath place the central role. Long before we change how we move, we begin by noticing how we breathe. The breath anchors us in the present moment. It invites us back into our bodies. It creates space to listen, to soften, and to become aware of what is already here. Through breath, movement, stillness, and presence, yoga becomes a practice of remembering.  When we release into the flow of Awen, it begins to move more freely within us, allowing us not only moments of inspiration, but a deeper sense of connection to the essence of all things. It becomes something we can return to again and again — a practice that deepens each time we come back to it. When we come back into connect with our own bodies, minds, and spirits, that connection expands outward — into our relationships, our communities, and our relationship with the living world itself. For us, this is the spirit of Awen. A practice of remembering ourselves.  A practice of remembering our connection — to our inner self, to one another, and to the living world around us. A practice of coming home. Through breath. Through movement. Through presence. Awen is the practice of coming home to ourselves, and through that, discovering our connection to all things.
